The United Arab Emirates (UAE) is a Federation that comparises the seven Emirates of Abu Dhabi, the capital in the southern part, Dubai - The Commercial Capital, Sharjah and Umm Al Quwain in the central region, Ajman and Ras Al Khaimah in the northern part and Fujeirah in the eastern part.
Dubai is the most populous and second largest emirate (in terms of size) in the federation, after Abu Dhabi. Dubai is distinct from other members of the UAE as revenues from oil account for only 6% of its gross domestic product. A majority of the emirate's revenues are from the JebelAli Free Zone (JAFZ) and now, increasingly, from tourism. With enormous construction and development in various industries, Dubai has attracted world attention through innovative real estate projects, sports events, conferences and Guinness records. The foresight of the rulers and concerted efforts to develop the infrastructure have been resulting in U.A.E., being compared to most of the developed nations of the world.
Dubai is unusual as its population is comprised mainly of expatriates, with UAE nationals (Emiratis) constituting the minority. The majority of these expatriates come from South Asia and South East Asia.
Dubai – known as the “Pearl of Middle East” and “The City of Merchants”, has over a period emerged as the major Cargo Hub in the Middle East. It not only serves its traditional Arab, North African and Indian subcontinent markets but consistent and continuous efforts are made to serve the growing markets of Europe, African and CIS republics.
Dubai's official language is Arabic, but English, Hindi, Persian and Urdu are also widely spoken, along with Malayalam, Tamil, Punjabi, and Tagalog.
